FISHERNET EXHIBITION
Exhibition showing the rich fishing cultural heritage of Orkney and in particular Stromness: fishing in Viking times, whaling, herring fishing, seafaring legends and folklore, fishing boats, fishing techniques and modern fishing practices. Also featuring fishing heritage archive photographs and an aquarium display from Heriot Watt ICIT.
The display will be supported by a leaflet guiding you through Stromness, highlighting key aspects of fishing heritage between Ness Point and the Pier Head. Available from The Old Commercial Hotel and Stromness Museum.

TALK: From the fish middens to the herring: 1,000 Years Of Fishing In Orkney
Dr. Jennifer Harland (UHI)
Zooarchaeologist Jen Harland will use the rich evidence from Orkney’s archaeological digs to illustrate Orkney’s role in the North Atlantic, encompassing the legacy of the Viking deep-sea fishing, the importance of sillocks and piltocks, and the recent rise and fall of the herring industry.

A collection of archive films depicting fishing, boat building and life on the sea, courtesy of films from the Scottish Screen Archive. Plus a talk on the restoration of The Otter Bank, currently on display at Scapa Flow Visitor Centre.

Herring fishing off the north- east coast of Scotland; the film follows the fishing boats from the time they put out to sea to the unloading of the catch at the fish market. It includes shots of fishwives gutting by hand and the process of traditional ‘kippering’.
