A collection of archive films depicting fishing, boat building and life on the sea, courtesy of films from the Scottish Screen Archive. Plus a talk on the restoration of The Otter Bank, currently on display at Scapa Flow Visitor Centre.

CALLER HERRIN’ (1947) 18m Scotland / Directed by Alan Harper

Herring fishing off the north-east coast of Scotland. Working life aboard fishing drifters, from the time they put out to sea to the unloading of the catch at the fish market. On the quayside fishwives gutt fish by hand and the catch is kippered by traditional methods.

A lyrical depiction of Highland boat-building from director Bill Forsyth, who 7 years later would be making the Scottish hit film ‘Gregory’s Girl’.

A subject close to Orkney hearts, an award winning film about the Otterbank which sees accountant William Groat and skipper David Irvine serve the islands of Orkney as a floating bank.
